Sour Grapes (1998)

Evan, a well-to-do doctor, and his girlfriend go to Atlantic City with his cousin Ritchie and his wife. Ritchie hits a jackpot using Evan’s quarters. Ritchie takes the money and Evan is bitter. The movie is a perpetual argument as to who should get how much of the jackpot. And both their lives deteriorate after winning.

At one point Evan lies to Ritchie, telling him he has a terminal tumor. Despondent, Ritchie sees this as an opportunity to take care of a nagging problem – his mother. It is not until after Ritchie almost kills his annoying mother by frightening her that he gets the message that the terminal prognosis was just a joke. When Evan hears the news of his aunt’s near death before he is to perform an operation, it throws him off and he ends up botching the operation, cutting off both balls of TV star Danny Pepper. Tensions continue to rise, Evan’s girl leaves him as does Ritchie’s wife. Danny tries to kill Evan because his now falsetto voice costs him his job on a hit TV show. In the end all the money is lost due to various problems caused by their antics.

Directed by one of the creators of the megahit Seinfeld TV show, this film feels very much like a sitcom and is full of Seinfeld-like bickering….although this time it is not so funny. Sitcom veteran Steven Weber as Evan adds to the feeling we are watching a made-for-TV sitcom pilot.

Oddly the funniest moment in the film is a parody of the very popular TV sitcom "Friends". About an hour into the film, Evan’s daughter is watching "Guys and Gals", a "Friends" parody, on television. We see the opening credit theme song and a bit of the opening scene. It is here that you can catch Meredith as one of the "Gals".

In the opening musical montage you can see her sitting on a couch in a robe reading while two gals behind her have a tug-o-war with a towel. She is also seen sitting on a couch with Danny Pepper both with facial masks (I am PRETTY sure that’s Meredith!). She is also dancing around a playground sandpit with the other "guys and gals" and taking part in a human pyramid which collapses as the song ends. As the show begins, Meredith (here playing a character named Degan) enters the apartment with Danny Pepper. Danny gives a line in his new falsetto which gets reaction from Evan and his daughter who are watching on TV. That’s all we see. Meredith has no lines and – in a travesty of justice – is the only member of the phony cast who is not given a credit in the opening credit montage. Well, she is cute and silly which is more than I can say for the rest of the movie!
