Girl In The Cadillac (1995)

Mandy Baker, a small town southern girl runs away to Corpus Christi to find the father she never knew. She meets up with a drifter named Rick who travels with her by bus. They stop in a town and meet up with Rick’s "Uncle Pal" and a friend named Bud, and convince Mandy to drive the getaway car for a bank robbery. They do this by convincing her that she needs to look like she has money before going to meet her father for the first time. The robbery goes bad; Rick leaves without the other two but with the money. Rick and Mandy go on the road, the uncle and friend after them. Mandy stops and gets some Naugahyde bags to put the money in. They get a first class hotel, buy nice clothes, and Mandy buys a Cadillac. She drives out to meet her father but learns that he isn’t her father at all.

As Mandy and Rick fall for each other, Pal and Bud catch up with them. The chase continues. Finally Uncle Pal and Bud find Rick in a motel room but Mandy is gone – she is driving home and is going to turn in the money, as it is the right thing to do. The three guys drive to her home for a big confrontation. But the money has already been returned and the missing money replaced (Mandy’s mom’s new boyfriend is well off). Rick tries to help the family – he kills Bud and Uncle Pal chases him outside. He tries to shoot Rick but Mandy runs Uncle Pal over with the Cadillac. Mandy has had quite an adventure.

This movie is okay at best. It does have some nice scenes but as a whole it just doesn’t work. There are numerous plot holes (Who is Mandy’s dad? Just what is the point of Mandy’s experience?). Erika Eleniak does a decent job as Mandy and William McNamera (who also played Meredith’s boyfriend Joel in Dream A Little Dream) is okay as Rick. Michael Lerner as Uncle Pal and Bud Cort as Bud are a puzzlement; they are never really that threatening or seem very dangerous but are more like a couple of bumbling boobs. Are we supposed to perceive them as a threat? This film would have worked better if it had spent more time developing the drama and characters instead of being so "fluffy".

Meredith has a scant one minute of screentime as a salesgirl who sells Mandy the Naugahyde bags with locks. She is cute and perky, sporting a southern accent and white cowboy boots. She provides a lighter moment with her sincere sales talk to Mandy…."if it gets dirty, you can just sponge it off. That’s the beauty of Naugahyde." Meredith’s minute time on screen is definitely the best minute of the film.
